A group of Volunteens has been donating their time to The Bellevue Hospital during the heat of the summer months.

On July 26, the teens held their sixth annual wheelchair wash at the hospital.

“In 1988, the Volunteens were looking for a service project and one of our employees mentioned that the hospital’s wheelchairs could use a good washing,” said hospital employee Diane Dower, who along with Volunteer Coordinator Karen Gehring, oversees the hospital’s Volunteen program.

“Since then, it has become an annual event that the teens enjoy and the staff appreciates,” added Dower.

This year, the teens washed a total of 20 wheelchairs in the nearly 100-degree heat and humidity. Afterwards, they were treated to pizza, soda, and brownies.

The Volunteen program at The Bellevue Hospital is open to any teenager.

The teens work during the summer and after school during the school year, Monday through Friday.
