TREE DEDICATION HELD

at The Bellevue Hospital

August 28,  2005  --

On Sunday, August 28, 2005, a group of 100 people gathered to formally dedicate 82 trees on the campus of The Bellevue Hospital during a “Celebration of Life” ceremony.

“The response to this project exceeded our expectations,” said Marvin Rettig, director of The Bellevue Hospital Foundation. In addition to the 54 Emerald maple trees surrounding the hospital on the circular drive, trees were also dedicated on the main drive and other entrances to the hospital because of the number of requests. “Each tree is also marked with an individual plaque,” Rettig added.

Michael K. Winthrop, president and CEO of the hospital, made special remarks during the ceremony, as did Robert Regula, chairman of the hospital’s foundation.

“I am always humbled by the support of our communities and I am truly grateful,” Winthrop said. Noting that he had driven by the trees dedicated in memory of his parents, he added that “the trees have given us the opportunity to celebrate and honor family and friends in a permanent way.”

Regula said the trees would serve as an “Index to the future and a reflection of the past.”

He referenced how a tree grows at both ends. “Branches grow and reach out to care for us with their beauty. As they grow and show fall foliage of reds and golds, lighting up this campus, it will be for the pleasure of patients and families. And at the same time, they sink their roots ever deeper into the community.

“Our future…ringed by these trees…will be one that we can be proud of because of our donations and investment in what’s right for the healthcare of our neighborhood,” Regula concluded.

Ruth Paul and her son, Roger, stand next to a tree dedicated by Ruth and her children to her late husband.

Father Keith Stripe, pastor of Bellevue Immaculate Conception Church, concluded the ceremony with a prayer of dedication on “The Importance of Remembrance.”

The Bellevue High School band provided music.
