Tour of Hope at The Bellevue Hospital

October 8, 2004  --

The Bristol-Myers Squibb Tour of Hope (www.tourofhope.org) made a late-night pit stop in Bellevue this morning, on the last part of a cross country bicycle journey that began last Friday, Oct. 1 in Los  Angeles, and will conclude Saturday, Oct. 9 in Washington, D.C.

The 20 cyclists from 18 states, their support staff, and support  vehicles arrived at The Bellevue Hospital parking lot at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, before the entire entourage departed for Baberton, OH around 1 a.m. this morning.

"Everything is going great. We have been warmly welcomed at all stops  along the way," said Gina Adduci, Tour of Hope Route Designer.

The Bristol-Myers Squibb Tour of Hope is a journey meant to inspire Americans to learn more about cancer research. The extraordinary team of cyclists, including six-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, is composed of cancer survivors, doctors, nurses, and researchers. They were selected from over 1,200 applicants. The Tour of Hope team hopes to raise awareness about the promise of cancer research and clinical trials.

Armstrong was not with the team at their stop in Bellevue, but will rejoin the group today in Pittsburgh, PA and will meet up again with  the team at the concluding rally on Saturday at the Ellipse located  behind The White House in Washington, D.C.

"These riders are taking turns in groups of five," continued Adduci. "As a group, they ride 80-100 miles before the next group of five 'tags' their hands and takes off, thereby keeping the relay going. They ride through the day and night, through all the different types  of weather, overcoming all obstacles along the way, just like people with cancer must do - overcome obstacles along the way as they fight  cancer."

The bicyclists will cover approximately 3,500 miles by the time the tour ends on Saturday.

The 63-person support staff for the riders includes caterers, medical  staff, media crews.

The riders were led out of town this morning with a police escort, compliments of The Bellevue Police Department.

The public is invited to take part in the tour by logging on to the www.tourofhope.org website and signing the virtual promise in honor of  a loved one, to learn more about cancer and the vital importance of cancer research.
