Skin Cancer Screening

at The Bellevue Hospital

July 27, 2004 --

A total of 77 people took advantage of a recent Skin Cancer Screening at The Bellevue Hospital.

Daniel Berry, MD, and Michele Ralofsky, MD, together screened 24 males and 53 female patients, from the cities of Bellevue, Fremont, Sandusky, Monroeville, Attica, Clyde, Burgoon, Tiro, Green Springs, and Lindsay.

Participants received a screening and educational material about skin cancer, including the risk factors, signs and symptoms, early detection, diagnosis and treatments.

They also received their results and a copy was sent to their doctor, if requested. If necessary, a referral was made for further evaluation. A total of 38 patients were referred for further evaluation.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) states that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Almost one million new cases are diagnosed each year. One in five Americans will get a skin cancer of some kind and one in 87 Americans will be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer.

Various skin conditions were seen ranging from the following: possible squamous or basal cell carcinoma, nevi or lesions, actinic keratoses, hemangioma, eczematoid, eye lid lesion, amelanotic mole, acne rosalia, telangectasia, sebborrheic keratoses, skin tags, popular rash, venous stasis, moles, nodular growth, iron deposits, and solar lentigenes.

The next scheduled Skin Cancer Screening is tentatively set for Saturday, July 16, 2005. Additional information will be released in the spring of 2005.
