NEW EQUIPMENT ARRIVING AT THE BELLEVUE HOSPITAL

MRI MAGNET DELIVERED THIS WEEK

December 23, 2004  --

During a week of gift giving and receiving, The Bellevue Hospital (TBH) on Monday took receipt of a rather large package – tipping the scales at over 13,000 pounds.

The magnet for the hospital’s new Toshiba Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine arrived by flatbed truck on Monday and was hoisted in to the hospital’s replacement facility, located at 1400 West Main Street. The hospital will officially open on March 13, 2005.

The magnet was delivered this week so that the east outside wall – intentionally left unfinished in order to bring the magnet in to the hospital – can now be finished. United Technical Support Services out of Aurora, OH, delivered and installed the magnet.

“This will be a 1.5 tesla actively shielded short bore magnet,” explained Marc Schoen, Radiology Department manager at TBH.

“What this means in simple terms is a much more powerful and faster MRI machine. Our current OPEN MRI machine is a .23 magnet, so there will be a huge difference in speed and quality.”

Overall cost of the MRI machine was nearly $1 million.

“Procedures that used to take one hour, such as a lumbar spine MRI, we will now be able to accomplish in about 20 minutes,” added Schoen. “And, the image received will be of better diagnostic quality, a clearer, more precise image.”

The machine uses a combination of radio waves and a strong magnetic field to create the computer-generated images of internal areas of the body.

“We do quite a number of MRI’s of the brain, spine, shoulders and knees,” continued Schoen. “This new magnet will also allow us to do more vascular work, such as looking for blocked arteries or for aneurysms in the brain.”

Despite being a “closed” MRI machine, this Toshiba model features the shortest bore (opening) available on the market, markedly reducing patient anxiety during exams.
