“People have asked me, ‘Will you miss the old building?’ But it’s not the building that makes the facility - it’s the people that have given their all that will make this building as special as the old one.” --  Janet Runner, RN, Vice President of patient relations, The Bellevue Hospital.

Those words sum up the feelings of both the patients and staff about the new Bellevue Hospital which officially opened for business Sunday.

It’s been a little over 48 hours since the hospital moved the first patient from its old building on Northwest St., to the new, $36 million facility, located on U.S. 20. All 19 patients - and over  40,000 patient records - were moved to the new building in less than two hours Sunday and according to hospital CEO/President Mike Winthrop, all of them “enjoyed the ride.”

“There were no issues or problems moving all of the patients here Sunday,” said Winthrop from his new office. “The first patient was brought over at 8:05 a.m. and by 9:45 a.m., all of them had been moved. North Central EMS volunteered their time and helped us out, making the transition a lot easier.” Although most of the hospital was operating in full swing by Sunday evening, the most difficult part about the move was trying to run  surgery and the emergency room at both places, said Winthrop.

“We ran both the emergency rooms and both surgery rooms for about an  hour and a half at both places,” he said. “And, we still have a number  of patients going to the old building, despite all of the advertising  we’ve done.”

“We had over 50 patients come through the emergency room yesterday,”  Winthrop added. “Normally, we see about 35 to 40 a day…every room was  full. We started surgery as scheduled as well and I haven’t heard that  anyone has experienced any problems. No news is good news!”

Along with the 19 patients that were moved into the new building, was  the last baby born at the old Bellevue Hospital. Jessica Kieffer and  Brandon Treece, both of Huron, were the last to use the delivery room  at the old facility.

They welcomed a seven-pound baby girl, Sophia Lee  Treece Saturday, March 12, at 5:02 a.m. “When they moved us over to the new hospital, the trip wasn’t that bad  at all,” said new mom, Kieffer.

“These rooms are really nice! We have  been very comfortable here. We get to go home today though.” So what do the employees think so far? Although there have been a few  minor glitches here and there, they couldn’t be happier, said Winthrop.

“The physicians have been ecstatic,” he said. “Most of them have told  me it’s like they know exactly where everything is - almost like  they’ve been here forever.”

Janet Runner, RN, vice president of patient relations, said the move  went very well and most of the staff is getting settled in. “The biggest deal so far, particularly for the patients, has been the  private rooms,” said Runner.

“This has really made life easier for the  nurses too. They’re not running up and own the halls looking for  things anymore. Everything they need is now close by and everything  had its place.

We didn’t have the room in the old building. This is  designed for the staff as well as the patients. And it makes it easier for us to keep our goal, which is keeping the nurse at the patient’s  bedside.”

“Our staff is doing really well so far,” she said. “We’ve had each  department come out and get oriented with the new facility.

There is some new terminology being used, but we will get used to it.” Runner said what she’s most impressed with is although the move may  have been a hassle at times, no one complained.

“It’s really gone remarkably well,” she said. “Everyone has worked really hard and put in extra hours - and no one has had one complaint  about it. They’re all just ecstatic to be here.”

“People have asked me, ‘Will you miss the old building?’ But it’s not  the building that makes the facility - it’s the people that have given  their all that will make this building as special as the old one,” Runner added.

The biggest concern now, for most of the staff, is getting people from point A to point B in the new facility.

“We’d just like everyone to know when they come into the hospital,  don’t be afraid to ask if you don’t know where you’re going,” said Runner.
