FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MAY MAMMOGRAPHY SPECIAL AT THE BELLEVUE HOSPITAL

FOR BREAST CANCER SCREENING

April 21, 2003 --

As it has for over the past decade, The Bellevue Hospital is once again offering a May Mammography Special in cooperation with its Radiology Department.

The theme of the special is, “Give the Gift of Love...The Gift of Life.

“It is a fitting tribute to show that you care enough about a person that you want them to be in your life for years to come, and be in good health,” Patty Semer, vice president of ancillary services, said.

In past years, the Gifts of Love have been purchased by daughters to give to their mothers, by friends to give to each other, and by husbands to give to their wives. Certificates, valid for one year, may also be purchased for one’s own use.

“We also want to emphasize the importance of mammography in the early detection of breast cancer, and to make low-cost screening available to people without insurance or without coverage for mammography,” Semer said.

The American Cancer Society states that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. However, studies have shown that early detection increases survival rates by more than 20 percent. And the most effective means of early detection includes a combination of mammography, monthly breast self-exams, and routine physical exams.

The hospital has recently added a state-of-the-art R2 ImageChecker to its Radiology Department. The R2 is a kind of spell checker for medical images. It digitizes the mammogram, scans it for abnormalities, and places a marker on anything it finds - even if it is barely visible to the human eye.

Mammography gift certificates may be purchased for $68 each by calling (419) 483-4040 in Bellevue, (419) 547-0074 in Clyde, and (419) 639-2065 in Fremont, Green Springs and Republic. Dial or ask for Extension 4223. Gift certificates are also available for purchase at the Cashier’s Office, Third Floor, of the hospital.

Because of the special pricing, no insurance claims will be filed for this special. Certificates can be ordered from May 1 through May 31, 2003 and are valid through April 30, 2004.
