FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FROM RUSSIA TO BELLEVUE

THE BELLEVUE HOSPITAL WELCOMES NEW OB/GYN PHYSICIAN

April 22, 2003 --

From Russia to Bellevue via Cleveland. That is the route Bellevue’s newest obstetrician took to become a member of The Bellevue Hospital’s active medical staff.

Gregory Karasik, M.D., begins his duties with the local facility on Monday, May 5. He is now accepting new patients, and is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, with expertise in total women’s healthcare, including pregnancy and delivery, infertility, menopause, and pelvic surgery.

“I was looking for a change of pace, something a little quieter,” said Dr. Karasik, while recounting how he became a part of The Bellevue Hospital team. “I saw a recruitment ad for the hospital, and phoned Marvin Rettig (vice president of development) to find out more. I was not only impressed with Marvin and the current hospital, but with the idea of possibly building a new hospital. That in itself was one of the main attractions for me,” added Dr. Karasik, who is currently in private practice in Cleveland.

Dr. Karasik, his wife, Regina, and daughter, Simona, all immigrated to the United States 15 years ago from St. Petersburg, Russia. Their son, Bobby, was born in the U.S.

“It was a political immigration,” said Dr. Karasik. “At that time, St. Petersburg was still called Leningrad and there was some political upheaval. My family and I came to America and the San Francisco Bay Area so that I could study for my recertification exams and become recredentialed to practice medicine in the states.”

Prior to leaving St. Petersburg, Dr. Karasik was schooled at the State School of Medicine in St. Petersburg before working as an OB/GYN at a maternity hospital. He completed his medical exams in California before heading off for Indiana University in Indianapolis, Ind., for his medical internship. “I found my way to Ohio after accepting an OB/GYN residency in the Canton area (Northeastern Ohio Universities-College of Medicine, Rootstown, OH, and Aultman Hospital, Canton). After that, I went into private practice in the Cleveland area,” added Dr. Karasik.

“My wife had a few reservations about moving to a small town, but it only took us one week to make the decision after visiting with the people at the hospital and seeing the schools, the City of Bellevue, and neighboring communities,” added Dr. Karasik. “Bellevue is still close enough to Cleveland so that we can have the opportunity to visit our friends, the ballparks, the theaters, etc.”

Added Dr. Karasik, “I wanted to go from an area where there are about 20 doctors per square meter (Cleveland area) to one where there was a real need (Bellevue area).”

Dr. Karasik is certified to practice a full range of women’s health services. He is now accepting new patients with appointments beginning Monday, May 5, 2003. For appointments or additional information, in Bellevue call (419) 483-4040; in Clyde, (419) 547-0074; or in Fremont, Old Fort, Green Springs and Republic call (419) 639-2065. Dial or ask for Extension 4405.
