NEW SURGEON JOINS THE STAFF

at The Bellevue Hospital

May 5, 2005  --

The Bellevue Hospital (TBH) has welcomed a new surgeon to the active medical staff.

Philip Hutchison, DO., joined TBH’s active staff on April 25. Dr. Hutchison is board certified in general surgery, and is also trained in vascular (blood vessel) and thoracic (chest area) surgery.

Dr. Hutchison comes to Bellevue from the Bronx, New York, where he was director of trauma and critical care, attending surgeon, and principal investigator for the National Brain Trauma Foundation, all at St. Barnabas Hospital.

His three children were the ones who were instrumental in bringing Dr. Hutchison from New York to Ohio.

“Simply put, my kids (Olivia, age 9; Zoe, 8; Noah, 7) wanted me to live closer to them,” explained Hutchison. “They live with their mother in Southern Michigan and I missed them very much, so I started looking for a job in the area from Cleveland, Ohio to Pontiac, Mich.

I interviewed for a job in Toledo and just did not feel like it fit my needs. The recruitment agency urged me to check out Bellevue before I left the area, so I did, back in July of 2004.”

Continued Hutchison, “So I met Marvin Rettig (Director of Development and Recruiting for TBH) and he showed me the new hospital and the Bellevue community. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day, including meeting the administration and other physicians and came away with very positive impressions.

I made a return visit in August and at that point had a serious decision to make because I had not intended to leave New York so soon. I initially turned it down because I had some unfinished projects to complete in New York, but when the position was still available in December, I sealed the deal and officially started working here April 25.”

Originally from Cuero, Texas, Hutchison received his undergraduate education at Texas Tech University and Northeast Missouri University; and his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri.

“After my undergraduate studies, I was preparing to go to Oberlin College in Ohio to study Renaissance Music,” continued Hutchison. “At the time I was playing piano and violin and had found the entire Renaissance Period fascinating.

But I had one teacher who was very influential in my life and she challenged me, saying she thought I could be very successful in society in a more functional, pragmatic way. I thought it over and talked it over with a friend of mine who had just started medical school.

My friend said ‘great’ when I told him I was thinking about medical school. He helped me pack and we drove from Texas to Northeast Missouri University where I earned a full scholarship in music as a pre-med major. I played violin in a string quartet all through college just to survive financially. I even had the opportunity to play with the St. Louis Symphony. It was great.”

From Northeast Missouri, Hutchison continued on to Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, all the while playing fiddle in several country and bluegrass bands to help him make ends meet.

From there, Hutchison began his medical internship at Lansing General Hospital, followed by private practice as a family doctor.

In 1989, feeling that he had neglected his true calling, Hutchison took a residency in general surgery (with a vascular fellowship) at Park Medial Center and Mt. Carmel Medical Center, both in Columbus, Ohio, followed by a trauma/critical care/surgical fellowship at University Hospital in Newark, NJ.

Eventually, his career path led him to St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, NY, a Level 1 Trauma Center.

“The Emergency Department at St. Barnabas sees over 100,000 patients a year,” said Hutchison, who noted that the television show, “St. Elsewhere,” was modeled after St. Barnabas.

“It was nothing for me to work 70 or 80 hour weeks, it was a very busy place. I am looking forward to working at TBH in an environment that is not so hectic and where I can put my surgical skills to good use.”

Hutchison is board certified in general surgery, including procedures involving the appendix, gall bladder, colon, stomach and thyroid. In addition, he is proficient in vascular surgery (cleaning or rerouting blocked blood vessels), including carotid artery surgery.

He is currently accepting new patients.
