NEW ANESTHESIOLOGISTWELCOMED AT THE BELLEVUE HOSPITALMay 6, 2006 --
Born in Minnesota, Dr. Gruneich later moved to Ohio and eventually graduated from Akron Firestone High School in 1988. From there, it was off to undergraduate school at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology. “At that point, I knew I wanted to study medicine and become a doctor,” said Dr. Gruneich. He enrolled at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico, where he met his wife, Mariana. He then finished medical school at New York Medical College in Valhalla, N.Y. “During my third or fourth year at medical school, I figured out that I wanted to become an anesthesiologist. I think it was because I really liked physiology, pharmacology, and anatomy. That, along with my technical skills, all seemed like a good mix to me.” Dr. Gruneich then enrolled in the anesthesiology program at the State University of New York in Brooklyn for the next four years before coming to TBH in February. “I was looking at medical job openings on the internet, concentrating on Arizona (where my wife has family) and Ohio (where I have family). I saw the listing that TBH was looking for another anesthesiologist to join Dr. Joe (Colizoli) and Dr. Jim (Stewart) on the active staff,” noted Dr. Gruneich. “I came here to check it out in September of 2005 and met with Marvin Rettig (Director of Development at TBH). I saw the whole hospital and I was impressed by how beautiful the facility was and how friendly everyone was. Dr. Joe and Dr. Jim were also very up front with me from the start and, all in all, this seemed like a good fit for me. “After arriving here, I found out that the hospital staff members work incredibly well together and really take pride in their job. You just don’t see that very often,” added Dr. Gruneich. The role of the anesthesiologist is more than just “knocking out” the patient prior to surgery, adds Dr. Gruneich. “A patient will talk with a surgeon and set up a procedure. At that point, when the patient comes in for their pre-surgical visit, the anesthesiologist might see them for a consult. We help to make sure they have all the proper tests completed, make sure all of their medications are adjusted, and get them ready for the procedure. “Then, right before the surgery, we will interview the patient to check their laboratory and radiological tests, etc. When the procedure starts we are maintaining their vital signs and keeping them pain free. Once the procedure is complete, we are right there with the patient in the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit (PACU) where we make sure they are breathing well and that pain issues or other problems are taken care of.” Finalized Dr. Gruneich, “My goal is to provide safe anesthesia and make sure the patient is well taken care of.” Dr. Gruneich and his wife, Mariana, reside in Clyde. |
