NEW OB/GYN, Dr. Ahmed

JOINS THE BELLEVUE HOSPITAL’S MEDICAL STAFF

May 12,  2005  --

The Bellevue Hospital’s newest OB/GYN was born and educated in Cairo, Egypt, raised in Kuwait, and now calls Bellevue her home.

It has been a journey of over 6,600 miles for Abeer I. Ahmed, M.D., OB/GYN, who recently joined the practice of Gregory Karasik, M.D., OB/GYN, and the active staff of The Bellevue Hospital (TBH).

Dr. Ahmed began working full-time on April 25 and is now accepting new patients.

She and her husband, Ehab Eltahawy, M.D., and their 22-month-old daughter, Danah, reside in Bellevue.

“I was born in Egypt and my parents, both of whom were teachers, moved us to Kuwait when I was very young,” recounts Dr. Ahmed. “From the beginning of my school years, I was exposed to many nationalities of people – a very diverse group if you will. I spent the first 12 years in the same school, then at age 16, moved to Egypt by myself so that I could attend medical school for the next six years,” added Dr. Ahmed, who completed her medical schooling, internship, and residency at Ain Shams University Hospital in Cairo, Egypt.

While in medical school, Dr. Ahmed met her future husband. She took up a toxicology residency in the poison control center, while Dr. Eltahawy worked in cardiothoracic surgery.

After marrying in 1995, the couple decided to “see what was out there in the world. At the time, we were both working at a general practice clinic, so we took our tests to get the American equivalent of our medical degrees and came to the United States in 1998,” said Dr. Ahmed.

The two landed in Michigan where Dr. Ahmed worked in the Department of OB/GYN at the University of Michigan, while Dr. Eltahawy found work with the Detroit Medical Center.

“I was pretty much just observing without really having any hands-on work,” explained Dr. Ahmed, “so we moved to Flint where I became heavily involved in research, becoming more familiar with the local medical system.

I was offered an OB/GYN residency at Hurley Medical Center in Flint. I finished in June of 2004.”

While at Hurley, Dr. Ahmed was elected by her peers as the chief resident.

Continued Dr. Ahmed, “My husband then started his fellowship in cardiology at the Medical College of Ohio, located in Toledo, so I began to look around the Toledo area for job opportunities.

A recruiting agency informed me about TBH and about a year ago, I received a call from Dr. Karasik. We then set up an interview with Marvin Rettig (Director of Development and Recruiting at TBH) and it all started to evolve from there. This area, this job, this opportunity was really attractive to me.

And, the people I met along the way have been wonderful. So in June of last year, I accepted the offer to come to Bellevue and practice medicine. We finalized everything with TBH in October, and my licensing and visa paperwork finally came through in April of this year.”

Dr. Ahmed is currently accepting new women patients of all ages. She is involved in total women’s healthcare, including uro/gynecological issues, infertility issues, menopausal care, and pregnancy and delivery.

“I am especially interested in helping younger, pregnant women who may be afraid of their situation. Because of their age, they may certainly have more needs, and I look forward to helping take care of them.”

Added Dr. Ahmed, “Some people might wonder why a young woman who was born in Egypt and educated in Kuwait would want to become an OB/GYN physician.

For me, it all goes back to the time when my mother had some health problems and needed an OB/GYN. She wanted a female doctor to treat her, but there were none.

I made up my mind at that time that this is what I wanted to do, what I wanted to become, so that other women might have the choice that my mother did not.”

Dr. Ahmed can be reached at 419.483-2494, at the practice of Gregory Karasik, M.D., currently located at 815 Northwest Street, Suite A, Building B.

Within the next month, the practice will be relocated to the medical office building directly behind TBH, at 1400 West Main Street, Building One, Suite A. The phone number for the practice is expected to remain the same after the move is completed.
