PHYSICIANS HONORED AT THE BELLEVUE HOSPITAL

National Doctor's Day

March 30, 2004  --

Physicians at The Bellevue Hospital were honored on Tuesday, March 30, with a Doctor’s Day breakfast.

Physicians were invited to attend a breakfast in their honor, where they were each presented a gift of appreciation, compliments of the hospital administration and staff.

“This was a way of showing our gratitude for the many hours of medical services provided to the communities we serve, 365 days a year, by our medical staff members,” said Marvin Rettig, Vice President for Development at the hospital. “We are grateful for the dedication and continual service of our many fine physicians.”

The Bellevue Hospital’s medical staff is headed by a quartet of officers for 2004, including Hilary “Tim” Timmis Jr., MD, president; Roger Garcia, DO, vice president; Andrew Huddleston, DO, secretary/treasurer; and Ed Hemeyer, MD, member-at-large.

The first Doctors' Day observance was held on March 30, 1933, by the Barrow County Auxiliary in Winder, Georgia. The idea of setting aside a day to honor physicians was conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, and the recognition occurred on the anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Barrow County, Georgia, in 1842.

Through the years the red carnation has been used as the symbol of Doctors' Day.
On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctors' Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate by Congressmen Mike Parker (D-Mississippi) and G. V. Montgomery (D-Mississippi) and Senator Thad Cochran (R-Mississippi) to establish a national Doctors' Day.

Following overwhelming approval by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, on October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 (which became Public Law 101-473) designating March 30 as National Doctors' Day.
