RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

 COLUMBUS – D. Ross Irons, MD, FACS, a general surgeon at The Bellevue Hospital and part of the Firelands Medical Staff (Bellevue, Clyde locations), was presented with the Distinguished Service Award of the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) at the chapter’s 49th annual meeting, held recently at the Hyatt on Capitol Square in Columbus.

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes Dr. Irons’ many contributions to the Ohio Chapter and to the betterment of the practice of surgery in the State of Ohio. Dr. Irons has served the ACS Ohio Chapter in many capacities, including chapter president.

He also served as a Governor-at-Large representing the State of Ohio (1994-2000) on the College’s Board of Governors and as a member of the Governors’ Committee on Surgical Practice (1995-2000).

He was chosen by the awards committee of the Ohio Chapter in honor of his long-time support of, and personal commitment to, the surgical profession in Ohio. Dr. Irons is the 19th recipient of the award since its inception in May of 1979.

Dr. Irons attended The Ohio State University Medical School in Columbus, where he received an MD degree in 1960. He became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1972.

He is currently on staff at The Bellevue Hospital, Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk, Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky, and Fremont Memorial Hospital. He also serves as associate clinical professor at the Medical College of Ohio, Toledo.

Nearly 1,000 surgeons are members of the Ohio Chapter, which was originally chartered in 1950 in Toledo. Its mission is to educate its members and the public about surgical care within the State of Ohio and to support the mission and goals of the American College of Surgeons.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the care of the surgical patient.

The College is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Its achievements have significantly influenced the course of scientific surgery in America and have established it as an important advocate for all surgical patients.

The College has more than 64,000 members, and it is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.
