Hospital Responds to Concealed Carry Law

Sets Parameters

April 8, 2004  --

Hospital Responds to Concealed Carry Law; Sets Parameters

In response to a recent law enacted in Ohio allowing citizens to carry concealed handguns, The Bellevue Hospital will not allow handguns or other weapons in its facilities or premises.

The new law, which takes effect April 8, allows private entities, such as the hospital, to ban handguns on their premises.

The hospital’s administrative team has approved a policy prohibiting ALL firearms, including concealed handguns, in hospital facilities or on any of the hospital premises. All individuals, even those with a license to carry a concealed weapon, are included in the hospital’s weapons ban.

The policy states that deadly weapons of any kind are strictly forbidden on hospital premises, including all buildings at the 811 Northwest Street property and all off-site buildings and sites operated as part of the hospital.

The hospital’s weapons policy applies to all patients, employees, visitors, board members, medical staff members, clinical practitioners, independent contractors, auxiliary, volunteers, vendors, and any other persons entering the hospital for any reason.

The only individuals permitted to carry a firearm on hospital premises are law enforcement officers.

Signs have been posted at all entrances of the hospital and all other hospital buildings announcing the prohibition of firearms, and that the hospital will prosecute all violators.

The Bellevue Hospital strives to remain socially responsible and protect the safety of patients, visitors, employees, medical staff, and volunteers, as well as the overall community.

The hospital also believes the policy prohibiting firearms and weapons reinforces its commitment to the communities it serves.
