Huron, O. –

H.B. Magruder Hospital, The Bellevue Hospital, Firelands Regional Medical Center, Fisher-Titus Medical Center and Memorial Hospital presented BGSU Firelands with a check for $113,765 to fund a new associate of applied science degree in radiologic technology beginning fall 2004 at the College.

The degree is being developed in response to the growing need for trained radiologic technicians. The program will prepare students as radiographers through academic courses and clinical education experiences. Radiologic technologists and technicians take x rays and administer nonradioactive materials into patients' blood streams for diagnostic purposes. Some specialize in diagnostic imaging technologies such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The Occupational Outlook Handbook indicates that employment of radiologic technicians is expected to “grow faster than average” through 2010. The Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks Radiologic Technologists tenth among jobs requiring the associate degree in terms of total job openings due to growth and total replacement needs. While hospitals are the primary employer of more than half of the radiographers, new job opportunities can be found in physician offices, imaging centers and other health care related facilities as health care services move toward a more outpatient service delivery system.

The concept of transitioning the hospital-based program to an academic-based program has been in discussion for more than two years. Firelands Regional Medical Center is closing its doors as a hospital-based program and is transitioning the program to BGSU Firelands.

Firelands Regional Medical Center has agreed to provide and maintain teaching facilities at the hospital, employ a clinical coordinator and provide instructional laboratories. All five hospitals will provide clinical sites for students. The College will retain academic control of the program, be responsible for the recruitment and registration of students, and provide student support services and financial assistance as needed. To ensure the greatest number of clinical sites for students in this high demand field, the University has agreed to work cooperatively with the five area hospitals that share the need for this new program.

“Admission to the program is limited to the number of students that can be accommodated by clinical sites. Following admission to BGSU Firelands, the student is responsible for filing a separate application with the radiologic technology program.

“Graduates will be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination to become certified and listed on the registry. Graduates must also satisfy the requirements of the Ohio Department of Health, Radiologic Licensure division, to obtain a license to practice in Ohio. Radiologic technology practice may vary based upon the requirements by other states that are dictated by the state’s law,” said Francine Todd, newly appointed lecturer and interim director of the radiologic technology program at BGSU Firelands.

For more information about the new radiologic technology program at BGSU Firelands, contact Todd at 419-433-5560 or 800-322-4787, ext. 20666.
