As construction on The Bellevue Hospital’s new replacement facility at 1400 W. Main Street continues, upwards of 175 workers at a time have been employed to help put together the $36 million facility.

But who puts the workforce together and oversees that part of the operation? For The Bellevue Hospital project, Jeff McLennand, senior superintendent, and Tim Schauer, assistant superintendent, representing Pepper Construction Company out of Chicago, are the men coordinating all of the behind-the-scenes action.

With a combined 44 years of experience behind them, the two are highly qualified to oversee the project from start to finish.

“Right now, we are 75-80% complete, and should be finished by the end of year,” noted McLennand. “We are finishing up on the mechanical work, the roofing, drywall, and painting. We are also setting cabinets, doing tile work, and installing lights.”

Ground was broken on the 109-acre site in July of 2003. Site work actually began in August, followed by the pouring of the foundation in September, and the erecting of structural steel in October. Approximately 30 acres are being used for the actual construction.

“We have used nearly 35 sub-contractors and suppliers along the way, and at the height of construction, had 175 workers in the building. Today, we average about 120 workers,” added McLennand, who noted that nearly all the work has been sub-contracted out to local and area contractors, including Thomas Steel, Janotta & Herner, Perry’s Plantation, and Erie Blacktop, to name a few.

“This job has been very well run from the start,” commented Schauer. “All the people involved have been so nice and friendly.”

Tim oversees the drywallers and all mechanical trades, while Jeff’s obligations lie with the bricklayers, ironworkers, roofers, and site work crews.

When not “living” in the construction office trailer at the construction site, the two are housed in condos located in Sandusky. “We are both here four days each week, with one of us here every Friday,” commented McLennand. “Once we turn over the keys to hospital employees, one of us will stay through January and February, maybe three days a week, to handle any problems or concerns associated with the move.”

One of the last things we will do in January is move the MRI and CAT Scan units in through the unfinished wall near radiology, then finish the wall and interior off in that area,” added McLennand.
