Annual Report - 2005
for The Bellevue Hospital

Almost two years after breaking ground on June 27,
2003, The Bellevue Hospital (TBH) opened the doors to
a new $36 million facility on March 13, 2005. The
original facility on Northwest Street served the
community for 88 years of continuous healthcare.
Even with all of the planning, design, construction,
and moving into the new facility, healthcare continued
as usual during last fiscal year at TBH.
“The enthusiasm from employees, medical staff, volunteers
and the communities we serve has been heartwarming,” said
Michael K. Winthrop, President and CEO of TBH. “Everyone is
excited to finally settle in to a new, state-of-the-art
facility that will be comforting to patients, families,
visitors and employees alike.”
Listed below are the services offered, care provided,
equipment updated, and advances made during the time frame
of September, 2003 to December, 2004, demonstrating TBH’s
goal of “Keeping Quality Care, Close to Home.”
ACCREDITATION: The hospital is part of the Continuous
Survey Readiness program to ensure compliance and to promote
quality care on an on-going basis from the Joint Commission
of Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.
ADMISSIONS: A total of 3,120 patients were admitted
to the Medical/Surgical, Intensive Care, and Family Birthing
Center units.
CARDIAC/PULMONARY REHABILITATION: A total of 3,313
visits for services in cardiac rehab, pulmonary rehab and
diabetic education. All staff members are certified in
Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
CARDIOPULMONARY: Cardiopulmonary employees performed
33,709 total inpatient and outpatient procedures. The
cardiopulmonary lab is also a clinical site for B.G.S.U.
Firelands Campus, University of Toledo, and Sanford Brown
Institute.
COMMUNITY BENEFIT PROGRAMS: The 18th annual Kiwanis
Blood Analysis Program served 860 patients and raised over
$5,500 for the Bellevue Kiwanis Club. The 24th annual
Auxiliary Golf Outing raised over $22,000. A total of
$22,000 was raised for the Bellevue United Selective Fund,
including $1,626 and 615 meals served at the 8th annual
Oktoberfest.
- AUXILIARY & VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS: Lights of Love.
Book Fair, Annual Christmas sale, Scholarship Program, Gift
Shop, and Volunteer Program for Volunteers and VolunTeens
who contributed over 8,000 hours of service.
- COMMUNITY HEALTH SCREENINGS: Blood hemoccult, blood
pressure, cholesterol, flu shots, glucose, prostate and skin
cancer screenings offered. Morning Health Break program,
Clyde Senior Center screenings, Bellevue Community Center
screenings, Medicine Shoppe, Hogues IGA, Miller’s SuperValu,
Pamida, Drug Mart, Seaman’s Pharmacy, and Bellevue Senior
Center screenings continue.
- PROGRAMS & EVENTS: Advanced directives, American
Red Cross bloodmobiles, infant and child CPR, Heimlich and
first aid classes, Freedom from Smoking, Germbusters
Handwashing, Harvest Good Health Women’s Program, Mature
Audience Luncheons, National Hospital Week, Ridge Elementary
School Business Partnership, school and community hospital
tours, and Speaker’s Bureau.
- SUPPORT GROUPS: Alzheimer’s, Cardiac ComeBack,
Diabetes, Remembering Together, Cancer, and Lupus support
groups offered.
DIABETIC EDUCATION PROGRAM: Certified Diabetic
Educator offering individualized counseling, educational
seminars and classes, quarterly newsletter, and monthly
diabetes classes. Monthly Diabetes Support Group offered.
DIETARY DEPARTMENT: Meals served to patients,
employees and visitors totaled 148,945. Room service program
continues to be popular with patients, who can order meals
off of a restaurant-style menu.
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT: 19,805 patients treated. All
nursing staff members certified in Pediatric and Adult
Advanced Life Support. All registered nurses are certified
in Trauma Nurse Care Course and Hazardous Materials
training.
EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION: 54 employees, seven medical
staff members and 10 honored guests, representing 1,223
years of services, honored at annual banquet.
FAMILY BIRTHING CENTER: 452 babies delivered in the
Family Birthing Center. Pregnancy Partners program continues
allowing patients to come in and complete their admission
paperwork and preliminary education process between 32-36
weeks during pregnancy, thereby simplifying the admission
process.
HEALTH COUNSELING SERVICES: Provided a total of 4,016
counseling sessions to seniors, hospitalized patients,
family members, and employees.
HOME HEALTH CARE: 3,840 home care visits by nurses,
home health assistants, social workers, physical,
occupational and speech therapists. Offices located in
Clyde’s Eliza Ramsey Home.
INTENSIVE CARE UNIT: A total of 1,485 patient days.
All RN’s are certified in ACLS. Many have also completed
Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
LABORATORY: 60,961 inpatient and 182,892 outpatient
lab tests completed.
MEDICAL/SURGICAL UNIT: 10,252 patient days for med/surg-pediatric-skilled
nursing-observation patients.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH CENTER: Lab testing and injury
care visits were up from the previous year. Nurse
practitioners received Certified Occupational Health
Nurse-Specialist certification. Staff attended the Drug &
Alcohol Testing Industry Association conference. Medical
assistants received certification in spirometry. Drug free
workplace and drug free EZ programs for area employers were
also started within the Occ Health Center.
PHARMACY: The Pharmacy Department dispensed 400,271
medication doses. During this same time, the Pharmacy
Department continued to streamline its inventory through
therapeutic interchanges, contractual agreements with
manufacturers, and other initiatives.
REHABILITATION SERVICES: 47,367 inpatient and
outpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy
procedures performed. Off-site services provided for Home
Health, Bellevue Care Center, and Bellevue City Schools.
RADIOLOGY: 29,889 X-rays, 5,813 CAT Scans, 3,678
ultrasound tests, 2,501 nuclear medicine tests, and 3,050
MRI procedures performed. MQSA mammography certification
received. State of Ohio inspection passed.
SOCIAL SERVICES: Over 1,300 cases were opened. All
staff educated on recognizing signs of abuse and neglect of
children and the elderly. Staff educated on the procedure to
follow in case of an abandoned baby. Updated policies were
rewritten on the use of skilled beds. Packets have been made
to assist in educating patients on how to obtain financial
assistance.
SURGERY: 3,561 total inpatient and outpatient
surgeries performed. The surgical staff is also involved in
many community service activities, including the annual skin
cancer and prostate screenings.
THE BELLEVUE HOSPITAL CLYDE CLINIC: A total of 5,259
lab tests were performed. Primary care and prenatal care
offered. Clinic hours increased to accommodate number of
patients. Staff attended Ohio Vision Screening seminar and
received pediatric vision screening equipment. Nurse
practitioner attended seminar on sexually transmitted
diseases, and also attended the National Primary Care
Conference.

to serve our community’s needs.
